Wine Myths and Storage Tips

Wine storage questions are frequent to hear whenever we do a tasting or a wine club event. Below is a list of a few myths that are common and some storage tips:

MYTHS

• Wine gets better with age, right? For the most part this is a myth. The majority of wine that is purchased is ready for consumption. If you buy a bottle of Serena, it is meant to be drunk. Do not cellar your Serena.
• Drink red wine at room temperature and white wine cold. Close, but not 100% accurate. Most people drink their red wine to warm and the whites to cold. For the best drinking experience you should chill your red wine for 10-15 minutes in your fridge before you open the bottle, and you should take your white wine out of the fridge 10-15 minutes before you plan on drinking it.

STORAGE TIPS

• The cute little wine rack that you have sitting on your fridge is not a good spot for your wine. Vibration and heat are not good friends of your wine. If you like the "look" of the wine rack on your fridge I suggest storing in it wine you do not intend on drinking. You could always use in the wine rack an empty bottle with the cork in it.
• Store your wine on its side; this will keep the cork moist. When a cork dries out air can get into the bottle; this will result in your wine having an off taste.
• If possible, store your wine in a dark place. Light, especially UV light, can destroy the aroma and taste of your wine.
• Keep your wine away from strong odors. The cork can allow air to pass, and a strong odor can penetrate this and be absorbed into the wine.

WHEN IN DOUBT, DON'T STORE YOUR WINE; PULL THE CORK AND DRINK!
